Contrast is an exhibition of contemporary photography highlighting analogue formats and techniques. Bringing together artists from across the North West, the exhibition features artists that use analogue photography in their work, in contrast to the ongoing development of digital formats.

By inviting each artist to submit work made using analogue techniques, the exhibition brings together a variety of subject matter and styles. Importantly it also demonstrates a range of photographic formats, from Polaroids to hand-coloured prints, and in some instances a combination of analogue and digital processes.

On 1st July, I spent the day in London exploring the current photography exhibitions. Catching the 5.45am train from Wigan, I arrived at London Euston at 7.55 and made my over to St. Pancreas to see Entente Cordiale, part of the London Street Photography Festival. And also saw Ticket to Life by Kate Garcia.

Following a coffee and an idea for photographing the spot I was sat at over a period of time, I made my way to the British Library to see Street Markets of London in the 1940s, then back over to the German Gymnasium for the London Street Photography Festival Vivian Maier exhibition and International Street Photography Award.

Catching the tube from Kings Cross to Piccadilly I tried to walk up Glasshouse Street as I read recently that it may have got its name due to the number of victorian photographer's studios there - but building work meant I couldn't walk along it, so I carried on to the Lomography store in Carnaby where I managed to buy a film for my camera and get a few ideas for different formats I'd like to try in future.

Next stop was Tate Modern - approaching via Millenium Bridge I took several photos around here before going in to see Photography: New Documentary Forms, Artists Rooms: Diane Arbus, Taryn Simon, and States of Flux

Then, finally at about 4pm I visited the Museum of London London Street Photography exhibition which had photos from 1860 onwards. I spent the rest of the weekend in London and finished the film which I can process back at my darkroom in Wigan.

Having been an associate member of OK for a few months now, following the open studio event I recently took a space within the studio in which I have set about building a darkroom.

So far this mainly consists of;

1 B&M bargains child-size gazebo and camping groundsheets

a few sticks to make it taller and some masking tape to hold them in place

several metres of duct tape and a couple of bulldog clips

and luckily some blackout material left over from previous projects and more donated by a fellow studio member

Not the most sophisticated structure on the planet but once complete it should do the job. Now if I could just get my hands on a bit more blackout material...

Routes is a collection of photographic investigations into journeys and destinations;

each one using random actions and self-initiated rules to explore systems that shape the journeys people and objects may take. Focussing specifically on public transport provision and postal services, journeys have been recorded using maps, journals, colour photography and pinhole cameras.

Continue towards church

Once reach church could go either way but neither seems interesting

turn back and bear left down St. Mary's Rd.

continue along road (shot 5) industrial tower and roof chimneys (shots 6-7)

follow curve in road which brings me to another main road

turn left

follow road but is too much traffic to take any pictures

decide to cross towards retail park and follow a footpath along a canal (shots 8-9) footballs and traffic cone in water

(shots 10-11) side street

pass fruit and veg stall and butcher

continue along road, find square n left, sit on bench, spot art gallery and heritage centre (shot 12) square at random

11.05 go for coffee

decide to walk around square, get to Partington Players Theatre (shot 13-14)

back near train station take photo of 'Oldest Card Shop' est. 1983

continue in same direction as previous but take first left, heading away from main town

reach roundabout (shots 16-19)

turn back

13.29 arrive Huddersfield. walk across platform to Leeds train calling at Cottingley.

13.59 arrive Cottingley (shot 1) leave station, into car park then newly built housing estate. Follow road round. Turn left down ginnel - hope it leads somewhere.

It doesn't.

Turn right towards a road, feel like could be stuck in this housing estate for a very long time. The streets have names like 'Mozart' and 'Vienna Court'. The buildings on the other side of the track look more interesting.

12.10 Think I might have found a way out. (shots 2 & 3) sheds and bridge

12.15 starts raining. reach a main road, bear left. See sign for Morley which passed on train. See building with graffiti around the window (shot 4)

continue along main road (shot 5) tower blocks. See sign ' welcome to Cottingley Hall' with vague map. decide to turn left (shots 6&7) across playing fields.

Consider turning left at 'The church in Cottingley' but then see a bus with the destination 'Leeds' heading anther way so decide to go in that direction. (shots 8&9) Cottingley Towers.

14.45 am near a cemetery still in the housing estate. very quiet around. am getting worried about finding the train station again, although I do suspect I've walked in a big circle.

Head towards abandoned looking play area (shots 10&11) then back to road and follow round.

14.53 think i might be walking parallel with the train line now, just need to find the station.

14.57 can see the sign for the station. Also see a train go past. next one will be in an hour I think. (shot 12)

12:30 leave Lancashire County Museum Service Preston.

12:39 post first postcard outside Maharaja Indian Restaurant. Take photos.

12:45 post second postcard outside Richer Sounds. take photos, one slow exposure not enough light - probably won't come out.

12:50 third postcard. Bump into Celia.

12:55 4th postcard RBS & Hat stand. Busy postbox can't get good shot. Is very dull today not getting very good exposure times and my hands are cold.

13:00 stop at bus stop to do map - have gone off map.

13:03 post another postcard.

11:51 continue down Darlington St.

12:00 reach bottom of King St. and first postbox. Take shot before cross. Post Postcard (Wigan Pier) take shot of box. Continue along King St.

12:05 reach top of King St. and see second postbox outside post office. Try to take shot but too dark so cross.

12:06 Post Postcard (Sport) take shot of box with background. Sit outside nearby church to write journal and map.

12:15 continue back onto shopping street.

12:18 reach postbox outside WHSmith. Post Postcard and take shot.

12:20 call into WHSmith to see if have any postcards of Wigan. Unsuccessful.

12:25 leave WHSmith and sit on bench to write journal and update map. Country & Western busker.

12:29 set off again as 'Achy Breaky Heart' starts.

12:32 Post Postcard in next box on way to Uncle Joe's.

12:34 head into Uncle Joe's to check for more postcards. Success. There are 3 different designs, buy one of each and a bag of mint balls.

12:38 leave shop. debate whether to try to find Smith's of Wigan. Decide not to and head home instead. Stop at bus stop near Gala Bingo to write journal and update map.

12:44 leave bus stop. Almost forget white carrier bag containing mint balls and postcards - have to go back.

14:43 try to photograph street sign - not enough light (grey/cloudy) try to push film - not enough light. Decide not to bother continue on journey.
14:57 arrive Wigan Tourist Information Centre - try to find postcards, cannot. After looking round whole shop and considering buying 'destination wigan' notebook, assistant offers to help and there are postcards afterall. 4 very similar designs. Decide to buy all 4 plus A-Z and leave shop.

15:07 check if newsagents have any postcards. No. Buy M.E.N. instead.

15:09 leave newsagents.
15:11 arrive Wigan North Western train station - 15:25 train to Preston delayed until 15:29. buy ticket.

15:13 arrive platform 5 to await train.

15:25 attempt another photo while waiting. First takes slow exposure. Change aperture and take second from first seat of outdoor bench on platform 5 - shows Wigan North Western sign, Union Jack in backgroun, footbridge that normally cross on way to work in morning, building with zig zag stairs.

15:28 'Sir John Franklin' train arrives platform 4 to block view.
15:35 train arrives 'Penny the Pendolino' - as trying to board am asked 'is this Preston?'
15:48 arrive platform 4 Preston train station.

15:49 leave station.
16:00 arrive Preston Tourist Information Centre, find postcards easily - there are more and seem cheaper - buy one of each design again. Have to ask for A-Z at counter.
16:08 leave T.I.C. getting dark.
16:19 arrive Preston train station - train to Wigan 16:58 decide to go for coffee.
16:24 buy hot chocolate and sit in cafe at train station to drink, reply to text, think of doing long exposures for length of train journey, make a call, read M.E.N.

16:46 decide to go over to platform 6 to wait for train. Have finished hot chocolate.

16:49 arrive platform 6. Can hear football fans in background - Liverpool by the sound of the chant.
16:53 'City of London' arrives platform 6. Walk to end of train - quiet zone, notice unmelted hail at this end of platform. Board train.

16:57 train departs.
